Being there for one of the UK’s largest charities, no matter the event

As a creative production agency, at Ruddocks, we’re very proud of our reputation in the charity sector, and one of our most valued client partners in this area is Macmillan Cancer Support (Macmillan).

As most people will know, Macmillan is one of the UK’s largest providers of specialist health care, information and financial support to people affected by cancer. It first engaged our team at Ruddocks in 2018, when a long-standing client contact of ours moved on to pastures new, taking up a key role on Macmillan’s events team.

Understanding an iconic brand

With a demanding schedule of fundraising initiatives, events and awareness campaigns to deliver, Macmillan needed to join forces with a creative production partner that had demonstrable charity brand management experience. It needed to work with an agency it could trust to deliver on its promises and it could rely upon to provide a cost-effective solution for every campaign asset produced.

Safeguarding the integrity and reputation of the Macmillan brand has been a key priority for us from the outset. After attending an initial ‘brand induction’ at Macmillan headquarters, our head of client strategy and creative director gained a deep grasp of Macmillan’s brand guidelines, and this understanding has directed our creative approach at every turn, not only giving our entire creative team an appreciation of the brand boundaries but also, crucially, providing a clear understanding of where the opportunities were to maximise creativity.

The work at a glance:

  • Individual campaign-branding lock-ups were developed, including a special anniversary identity to celebrate 50 years of the Macmillan York Raceday partnership.
  • Supporter-engagement collateral was designed and produced for well-known national initiatives (including the annual ‘Macmillan Carol Concert’ and ‘World’s Biggest Coffee Morning’) along with special projects (including the ‘Taking the Big Leap’ campaign), which were designed to engage business leaders, philanthropic individuals and charitable trusts.

Getting partnership celebrations on track

Having held its Raceday Lunch in collaboration with York Racecourse for half a century, Macmillan wanted to make the 50th anniversary event particularly special. As always, it entrusted our team at Ruddocks with producing high-quality event materials, including invitations, promotional print, seating plans and menus. From the creation of distinctive graphical devices to celebrate the milestone partnership anniversary to the production of bespoke illustrations and fundraising collateral, we ensured the occasion was a huge success, all the way to the finish line.

Making the right connection with supporters

At Ruddocks, we believe the key to a successful charity event is creating a memorable and immersive experience for the guests. We’ve helped Macmillan to set the right visual and sensory tone at many of its high-profile fundraising occasions, including its Celestial and Midsummer Balls. By boosting design values during every guest interaction and introducing quality production finishes – such as tactile, soft-touch laminates – we’ve been able to ensure event assets like table cards and event guides become integral to the emotive ambience created.
